چکیده

background: multiple sclerosis (ms) is the most common demyelinating disease. an autoimmune basis has been confirmed for pathogenesis of ms. prolactin (prl) has roles in these mechanisms. its serum levels change in ms according to some reports. the purpose of this study was to survey these changes in ms patients. methods: sixty ms patients were included in this cross-sectional study. the same number of controls matched for sex and age were studied. pregnant, lactating women, consumers of specific medications and patients with underlying diseases were excluded from our study. ria was used for determination of serum levels of prl. results: in this study, prl level in male patients was 14.23 â± 11.47 ng/ml compared to controls with mean level of 7.21 â± 4.12 ng/ml (p value <0.001). mean prl level in female patients was 20.18 â± 11.04 ng/ml whereas controls had a mean level of 14.45 â± 6.93 ng/ml (one-tailed p value <0.05). so there were significant differences in serum prl level between case and control groups in both men and women conclusions: prl has a positive relation with ms in both sexes. further studies for determination of causality relation and drug effect in endocrine system on ms pathogenesis are suggested. key words: multiple sclerosis, prolactin, male, female

Serum Bilirubin Level Changes in Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disorder of the Central Nervous System (CNS). In addition to the role of immune mediated mechanisms, oxidative and nitrosative stress also play an important role in neuropathology of MS. Bilirubin as an endogenous antioxidant has neuroprotective effects; however few studies have assessed the association between serum bilirubin level and MS....

Serum prolactin level in psoriasis

The recent report, “Serum prolactin level in psoriasis”, is very interesting 1. Ghiasi et al. concluded that “it seems that while intracutaneous prolactin may contribute to the pathogenesis of psoriasis, the probable role of pituitary-produced circulating prolactin in the disease process needs further investigation .” There are some concerns on this report. First, although Ghiasi et al. have st...

The Serum Level of Midkine in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis and Neuromyelitis Optica

Introduction: Midkine (MK), a heparin-binding growth factor, is involved in neurological diseases by mediating the inflammatory responses through enhancing the leukocyte migration. The present study assesses the serum concentration of this growth factor among newly developed Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) patients. Methods: The present research, as a cross-sectional stu...

Serum Prolactin Levels in Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromyelitis Optica, and Clinically Isolated Syndrome Patients.

INTRODUCTION Prolactin has been discussed as a factor likely to play a mediating role in multiple sclerosis (MS). Our aim was to investigate the possible association between prolactin production and clinical features of autoimmune demyelinating central nervous system disorders. METHODS Serum prolactin levels of 255 MS patients, 19 neuromyelitis optica (NMO) patients, 15 clinically isolated sy...

Serum Metabolic Profile in Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive demyelinating process considered as an autoimmune disease, although the causes of this pathology have not been yet fully established. Similarly to other neurodegenerations, MS is characterized by a series of biochemical changes affecting to different extent neuronal functions; great attention has been given to oxidative/nitrosative stress and to alterati...

Correlation of Midkine Serum Level with Pro- and Anti-Inflamatory Cytokines in Multiple Sclerosis

Background: Midkine (MK) is a heparin-binding growth factor with promoting effects in inflammatory responses through enhancing leukocytes migration. Objective: To study the correlation between MK serum levels and concentration of inflammatory cytokines in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients. Methods: We evaluated the MK level and its relationship with inflammatory cytokines (IL-17 and IL-23) and a...
